Lavasoft Adaware Ad Aware Pro 2007 Review

Lavasoft was one of the first companies to recognize the dangers posed by spyware and to offer a solution. For ages, its Ad-Aware was one of the very few antispyware solutions available. In recent years Ad-Aware's star has dimmed, but with the release of Ad-Aware 2007 Pro, it's back in the spotlight with a fully redesigned engine and a spiffed-up interface. The question is has the company done enough to the actual performance of the app that you can trust it to protect your computer against spyware? To install Ad-Aware, you download the same file regardless of the version you've chosen—it always starts life as the Free version. If you've purchased a subscription for Plus ($26.95) or Pro ($39.95), you simply enter the registration code to activate the additional features. And if you don't renew your subscription before it expires, you'll still have the free version's spyware-removal functionality.Free Spyware Removal, Worth the PriceAfter verifying with Lavasoft that spyware removal in the free version is exactly the same as in the Plus or Pro versions, I loaded AAW Free onto all of my malware-infested test systems. Again and again, I ran into an odd problem with the test systems. Every time I clicked the Update button to be sure of having the latest software and definitions, I got a "server busy" error. If I tried to run a scan, it said "Can't start Full Scan, scanner is busy." According to Lavasoft, what both of these messages really mean is that an automatic update is already in progress in the background; a coming release will change those messages to explain more clearly what's going on. That's a good thing; the current messages are misleading. The nasties installed on my test systems include adware, spyware, Trojan horses, rootkits, polymorphic threats, even rogue antispyware programs. AAW's scan was speedy—about 12 minutes on my standard clean test system and not a lot longer on the infested systems. The combined virus/spyware scan in Spy Sweeper and Norton Internet Security took about a half-hour; Spyware Doctor took much longer. One system's rabid malware kept AAW from installing, and it wouldn't install in Safe Mode even after I applied Registry tweaks supplied by Lavasoft. Another system installed okay but wouldn't scan; scanning in Safe Mode solved that problem. Yet another went into a blue-screen death spiral after malware removal—I never did get that one fixed, even with Lavasoft's help. Ouch!AAW reports its findings in two separate groups, Critical Objects and Privacy Objects. The latter group includes low-threat items such as tracking cookies. Every single one of my samples that AAW detected wound up on the Critical Object list, which makes sense. For each object AAW reports a "Threat Analysis Index" from 1 to 10 and an expandable listing of all the file and Registry traces associated with that threat. You check off the ones you want to remove (typically all of them) and click Quarantine or Remove. If necessary, AAW queues up removal of entrenched threats for the next reboot and warns that a reboot is needed. But unlike most antispyware products, it does not offer to perform that reboot automatically—you'll have to remember to do it yourself. My high hopes for this updated tool's success were quickly dashed. It did a good job of removing simple adware and spyware and even handled rogue antispyware programs well. But against Trojans and rootkits, it was almost completely ineffective. Lavasoft verified that AAW can't detect files that are hidden from the Windows API using rootkit techniques; rootkit protection is currently in development and planned for a future version. On a scale of 10, with 10 meaning it both detected and removed every threat, AAW scored 5.9. Tested against the same gang of nasties, Spy Sweeper scored 9.0 and Spyware Doctor nosed ahead with 9.1.I separately tested the product's ability to detect and remove commercial keyloggers; in this test, it scored a big fat goose-egg. Lavasoft verified that they do not attempt to remove such programs. "We want to respect the business model of the companies that manufacture monitoring software." I can see their point, but I'd at least like to be told that monitoring software is on the system. As mentioned, the Ad-Watch real-time protection is a feature included only with the paid Plus or Pro versions. I installed AAW Pro on a clean system and started tossing malware installers at it, to see how well it would protect me. As noted above, Lavasoft made a decision to ignore commercial keyloggers, and indeed it ignored those samples. Of course if an industrial spy or private eye is sitting at your desk installing a keylogger, you've got problems that software alone can't solve.Ad-Watch pops up an alert when it detects malware launching and asks whether to block it—I always blocked those. The app also pops up alerts when any program, malicious or legitimate, makes certain system changes such as adding itself to the startup sequence. I allowed the latter sort of change unless the program was identified as malicious. Ad-Watch does include an option to skip the popups and always allow or block, but unfortunately it doesn't distinguish between the known-malware popups and the system change popups.Just as in the removal testing, AAW's effectiveness decreased as the nastiness of the threats increased. It blocked installation of many spyware and adware samples, but missed most of the Trojans and rootkits. Overall it scored 5.0 out of 10 on this test. SUPERAntispyware and iolo's System Shield 3 didn't do well in testing, but they did better than that, with 5.9 and 5.2, respectively. At the high end, Spy Sweeper scored 8.1 and Spyware Doctor an amazing 9.8 against this same test set.AAW supports Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera, and its TrackSweep module automatically wipes away traces of your Web surfing in all three. There's a built-in option to set a System Restore point after cleanup. They say this will help you recover after a spyware attack, but I'd be happier if the product simply prevented that attack from ever happening.Other features are specific to the Plus and Pro versions. Besides Ad-Watch real-time protection, the Plus version offers automatic updates (AAW Free users must update manually), custom scans, and scan scheduling, as well as a HOSTS file editor (which lets über-geeks check to be sure that malware hasn't added HOSTS file lines that redirect attempts to reach valid domain sites to fraudulent copies). In addition to all those, he Pro version offers some features that are primarily aimed at the most technical users. With it you can launch scans from the command line, monitor network traffic, and get a detailed view of all running processes. Still, no amount of bonus features can make up for that Ad-Aware 2007 just doesn't stand up to modern threats. I'm pleased to see that Lavasoft has energized the product's development. The new scan engine is fast, and the interface is slick. You might consider using the free version as a "second opinion" scanner. But don't pin your system's security on Ad-Aware; it's not ready for that responsibility.

Anti-spyware - The Wave Of Protection Needed For Today

Many people buy their new computer, and then are dismayed that it does not always come with the latest software programs already installed on it. Buying lots of software programs to add on to your new computer system can seem like, and often is a costly process, both in time and money. Many people are tempted to go without certain software programs, and tell themselves, they will purchase them at a later date, when they know a bit more about their new computer system, and can better understand what they really need.At the very least this spyware can disrupt the smooth running of your computer system. This will make it difficult to carry out even simple and basic tasks. But there is a much more sinister and harmful threat. Spyware is able to attach itself to your computer and this can often comprise the security of your system. This means that any personal information you have stored on your computer, is potentially at risk of being used by others for malicious purposes. Moreover it is important first to understand the role antispyware software plays and for that it is important to understand the meaning of spyware. Spyware is a kind of program or software which is attaches itself to the users computer along with some other content that is downloaded from the internet. The spyware monitors and in a way also controls the computer usage. Many new computers will come with an anti-spyware software program already installed. But you need to check with the terms and conditions regarding this pre-installed software. In most cases, it is only free for a short period of time. This is usually around 3 months or so. When the free time is up, the pre-installed anti-spyware software will still continue to work, however, it will not continue to update itself on a regular basis. If you want this to happen, then you need to purchase a subscription to the anti-spyware software. This is easily done, and usually just means that you go online and visit their site to update your free subscription to a paying one. Once this is done, you can rest assured that your computer is protected, and that the software will update itself on the Internet. The basic function of the antispyware software is to ensure that no such damaging spyware is attached to the computer. For this the best available antispyware software needs to be installed. Most of the spyware today are tackled by the antispyware software commonly available but even then problems do occur due to various reasons and they can be detected in many ways as well.By using spyware to attach itself to your computer, companies and individuals are able to see what websites you visit, how long you stay there, and in some cases, what transactions you carry out. Sometimes this information can be used to send you spam emails that will clog up your mail box, and may be harmful to your computer if you open them and download any attachments. It is easy to see why avoiding the purchase of anti-spyware software is often a false economy.

Windows XP Optimization Tips

PC optimization is not something new, but still requires some time and proper tools to get it working.I have been playing with PC optimization for 12 years since Windows 95, I am not the best optimizer, but rather an enthusiast for Personal Computer...I still remember the old days of Windows 95 and 98! Back then we can only rely on some tips and tricks from the books, and Internet is just starting to get hot! Norton Utilities is the most popular Windows maintenance software in those days. Not until the introduction of Windows XP, things has started to change! We get more and more maintenance software, Norton Utilities becomes less important for up-keeping a healthy PC, and because of Windows XP hunger for resources (Same with all New launch Windows), tuning the necessary service and maintain a good resources, becomes critical to home user, because they need a lot of application for their PC. The tool that only load and unload necessary program, accelerate the computer performance, has became important to every home user; But home user are always looking for something more user-friendly and rather than effective, and at the same time without the requirement of professional knowledge...Computer optimization often refer to software tuning, but you can't ignore hardware tuning as well, the PC Over-clock (CPU and Memory over-clock). Software tuning is more important because it unleash the hardware potential by multiple times, and safer to play with, because it won't damage your computer (Normally...).As we continue, we will take a look at how this new information can be implemented in very special ways. The PC optimization we discuss here is all about Windows optimization, how to unleash the real power of Windows, what kind of software should we use to effectively speed up the computer. I am going to talk more details about XP optimization, and some of this will apply to Vista as well. Windows 95 and 98 has limited coverage here.Since Windows XP launches Service Pack 2 (SP2), the operating system has never been so stable and fast! But still there are more to be done in order to maximize your Computer potential power. If you are still using SP1, go get SP2 fast. The first step to speed up your computer is to minimize your Windows Registry entries by removing unnecessary records. To do that you can either use free registry cleaner or commercial registry cleaner (Which is better in every way).In the next Step, you should minimize the memory and CPU resources by disabling unused services and minimizing startup programs. The biggest optimization problems is to know what kind of services to stop, what kind of start-up program to disable, if you do it wrongly, you might have abnormal behavior with certain applications. You don't have to be expert in Windows, there are many software around to help you, to select the best maintenance software, you should always prepare a clean machine, install Microsoft virtual PC as the major testing tool (This is free from Microsoft) and test with any tools you can find in the Internet. I know this is time consuming, so We have done some of the test for you.For Instant access to more tools and information, please visit PC Optimization
